- Lev Tolstoy, 1851'de Rus ordusuna yazıldı ve Çeçenlerle savaşmak için Kafkasya'ya gönderildi. Bu savaş sırasında, büyük Avar komutanı Hacı Murat Çeçen lider Şamil'le anlaşmazlığa düşmüş, güvenliği için de Rusların tarafına geçmişti. Aylar sonra, ailesini Şamil'in hapishanelerinden kurtarmaya çalışırken, Hacı Murat ihanet ettikleri tarafından takip edilmiş ve hayatının en kahramanca mücadelesini verdikten sonra, öldürülmüştü. Hacı Murat'ın ölümüne kadarki pek çok olaya şahit olan Tolstoy, uzun yıllar sonra asalet, gurur ve dehşetle dolu bu hikayeyi kaleme aldı. 1912'de, Tolstoy'un ölümünden bir sene sonra basılan bu son romanı, hem savaş ve siyasetin doğası, hem de iki farklı kültür ve dünya arasına sıkışıp kalmak hakkında bize derin bir bilgi veriyor.
