- A dimension on a drawing is two things at once: a size, and a statement of how much that size may vary from part to part. A reader who takes only the first has half of it.Every tolerance can be turned into two numbers, the largest and the smallest the feature may be. Once a reader can do that, everything else in this book follows from arithmetic: the fits between a hole and a shaft, the way tolerances add along a chain, and the scale that turns a drawn length into a real one.The drawing is the record. A dimension is read, never measured off the paper.WHAT IS INSIDEPart 1: what a dimension is. Extension lines, dimension lines, the value and the tolerance; six kinds of dimension; the rules a reader works to; what the drawing does not say.Part 2: the title block. The part, the scale, the units, the general tolerance, the projection symbol and the revision, and what each one settles.Part 3: tolerance. Bilateral, unequal bilateral, unilateral and limit forms, and how to get the two limits from each. Eight sizes read and worked.Part 4: how the sizes are laid out. Chain, baseline, ordinate and combined, and why a chain accumulates while a baseline does not.Part 5: fits. Clearance, interference and transition, worked from the four limits. Largest clearance, smallest clearance, and what allowance means.Part 6: scale. Forty drills, twenty practice drawings, eight fits, four stacks, nine worked readings, and a full answer key that gives the answer and where it comes from.Every limit, clearance, stack and scale figure in the answer key is worked from the numbers printed on the drawing by the rules stated in Parts 3 to 6. On the practice drawings the features are drawn where the printed dimensions put them, so the picture and the numbers agree.THE CONVENTIONS THIS WORKBOOK STATESA dimension is read, never scaled off the sheet: the printed number governs. An ordinary untoleranced size takes the applicable general tolerance when the drawing's notes or standard make that general tolerance applicable to it. A value in brackets is a reference, given for information and not worked to.WHO IT IS FORAnyone handed a drawing and expected to work to it: a machinist, a fitter, a fabricator, an apprentice, a buyer or planner who needs to know what a drawing is asking for, an inspector learning what the numbers permit, and a student meeting dimensions and tolerances for the first time.WHAT THIS BOOK IS NOTThis is a reading workbook, not a design or an engineering document. It does not design a part, choose a tolerance, select a standard fit from a table, or say whether a size suits a service. It does not cover geometric tolerancing: feature control frames, datums and material condition modifiers are a separate subject. It does not inspect or measure anything; how a size is verified is the inspection plan's question.
